Abstract

This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of growing season on the content and composition of the essential oil of basils. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), purple basil (Ocimum basilicum purpurascens), and bush basil (Ocimum minimum) were grown in a hydroponics culture system (NFT) with a nutrient solution developed by the European Vegetable R & D Center in Belgium. They were grown in spring, summer, and winter. The highest content of essetial oil was obtained in summer. The content in spring grown basils had more essential oil than those in winter grown basils. Essential oil content of the winter grown sweet basil decreased drastically. The total yield of essential oil was very variable depending on the growing season. The content of linalool and eugenol was highest in the summer grown basils. Especially the content of eugenol was affected by the growing season. In contrast, the highest content of sesquiterpene was obtained from the winter grown basils and the lowest was obtained from the summer grown basils.
